In 1884, Republicans (the party of Abraham Lincoln who was assassinated in 1865) constituted only about 8.7% of the Louisiana House of Representatives and 12.3% of the Senate. The majority of the legislature was, arguably, still sympathetic to the Confederate cause and embraced segregation of the races. (Note: 1884 was an election year; the above percentages reflect both incoming and outgoing members.)
